Why I Started Taking Surveys in 2012
By Rachid | May 2026 | North Carolina
My name is Rachid. I live in North Carolina and I have been taking paid surveys online since 2012. That is over 14 years of testing, trying, failing, and eventually finding what actually works.
This is not a story about getting rich. It is a story about finding small but real ways to earn extra money from home — and sharing what I learned so you do not have to waste your time the way I did.
How It All Started
Back in 2012 I was looking for ways to make a little extra money in my spare time. I had heard about paid surveys but honestly I was skeptical. Getting paid just to share your opinion? Sounded too good to be true.
But I decided to try anyway. I signed up for a few sites I found online and started taking surveys in the evenings after work. The first few weeks were frustrating — I kept getting disqualified, some sites never paid, and others had such high cashout thresholds that I could never actually reach them.
I almost gave up.
"I almost gave up after the first month. The sites I had chosen were terrible. But something told me to keep looking — and I am glad I did."
The First Time I Actually Got Paid
After doing my research and switching to better sites I finally got my first PayPal payment. It was not much — just a few dollars. But seeing real money land in my PayPal account from something I did on my phone at home — that felt different.
It was real. It worked. And I wanted more.
From that point I started getting more serious about it. I tested more sites. I tracked which ones paid the most and which ones were a waste of time. I learned how to fill out profiles properly to get matched with better surveys. I started earning consistently every single month.
Why I Started This Blog
Over the years I watched the same thing happen to people around me. They would hear about paid surveys, get excited, sign up for the wrong sites, get frustrated when they never got paid, and give up thinking the whole thing was a scam.
It broke my heart because I knew it was NOT a scam. I had been getting paid consistently for years. The problem was not paid surveys — the problem was that people were signing up for the wrong sites.
So I started this blog. My one simple goal was to share the sites that actually paid and warn people away from the ones that did not. That was it. No fancy mission statement. No big business plan. Just a guy from North Carolina who wanted to help people avoid the mistakes he made.
The blog went quiet for years — life got busy and I stopped posting. But I never stopped taking surveys. And in 2026 I came back to update everything, fix all the old broken links, and share what I have learned over 14 years of doing this.
What I Have Learned After 14 Years
1. Most survey sites are not worth your time
Out of dozens of sites I have tried over the years only a handful are consistently worth using. The rest either pay too little, disqualify you constantly, or make it impossible to reach the cashout threshold. Sticking to the proven sites saves you hours of frustration.
2. Consistency beats intensity every time
Doing 20-30 minutes every day earns far more than doing 3 hours one day and nothing for a week. Survey availability peaks at certain times and being consistent means you never miss the good ones.
3. Use multiple sites at once
Survey supply runs dry on any single site. Using 3-4 sites simultaneously means you always have something available. This single change more than doubled my monthly earnings.
4. It is not life changing money — but it is real money
Surveys are not going to replace your income. But $100-$300 a month from something you do on your phone in your spare time? That is real. That covers groceries, bills, or savings. Over 14 years that has added up to thousands of dollars I would not have had otherwise.
5. The scams are everywhere — but so are the good sites
For every legitimate survey site there are five scams. I have been burned before. I have signed up for sites that never paid. Now I know exactly what to look for and I only recommend sites I have personally verified.
Where I Am Today
Today I still take surveys regularly. It is part of my routine — a few minutes in the morning, sometimes in the evening, whenever I have a spare moment. It is not a big production. It is just something I do consistently that puts extra money in my pocket every month.
I also expanded into mystery shopping, focus groups, and GPT sites — all of which I have written about on this blog. Each one adds another stream of small but real income.
And I keep this blog updated so that anyone who finds it gets honest up to date information about what works and what does not. No fluff. No hype. Just real information from someone who has been doing this for 14 years.
"If I can help even one person avoid the scams I fell for and find the sites that actually pay — this blog is worth every minute I put into it."
